What does Cultural Responsive Pedagogy mean?
Since we haven't started our feel placement, I want to start with "What does cultural responsive pedagogy mean"? To me, Cultural responsive pedagogy is teaching students experience and building in the classroom based on the students cultures. It is a framework that allows teaching and learning to show how powerful culture can be in shaping the worlds around each student. This meaning, teachers can use their students culture to connect students to new concepts. When we were at P middle school, we saw multiple ways the teachers and all staff were in putting culture to their daily lives. Mr.E would allow the students to openly express their opinions based on their culture and have the students explain why they think the way they do. this was a learning experience for all including the teachers.
We were assigned to read 5 different articles. Those articles talking about what cultural responsive pedagogy is, self-awareness and cultural competency, what it means in education today, being culturally responsive, and being culturally sensitive, relevant, responsive, and sustaining assessment. Throughout all of these articles, we were being taught the true meaning of Being culturally responsive, how other people are being responsive, and how to use it in our classrooms. The article that I enjoyed the most, was Being Culturally Responsive by Learning for Justice because the video was I loved how the speaker was with his culture and understanding. I thought that the speaker did a great job explaining how latinos seem to be lower in the standings compared to white students but he's also understanding as a latino how his culture is being "placed". I also thought that it was amazing how he connected everything with an understanding.
I grew up in a primarily caucasian school where there wasn't much diversity. We learned about different cultures but we were limited to what we could learn due to not having any cultures within our own school. Within the past few semesters, I've learned so much on how schools can change their students by allowing cultures and teaching the students about the real world.
As a future teacher, the first thing I would do is ensure to use the students prior knowledge so they have something to start off with. I would also encourage that student to share with one another when were doing the assignments. I want my students to have a good relationship with one-another to make everyone feel heard and understood. I would also ensure that I, understood what I was teaching by finding journals to read, speaking with other teachers, and asking for help when needed. There are so many different things as teachers that we need/want to do to ensure we have a better classroom.
