Student Assessment
Challenges of online assessment
Assessing learning for online students can be important for both teachers and students. its helpful for the teachers to know exactly where their students are at and what may need improved. It can be helpful for student so they can see where they are improving within the courses. Some challenges that arise during online assessments are the impact of distance (physically) between the student and the teacher, adaptations from necessity of using technology for communication between students, and finally, workload and time management. These three challenges are just some of many issues that become apparent during online teaching.
Effective practices for online assessments
Effective practices for online assessments consist of written assignments, quizzes, test, presentations, online discussions, interactive work, etc. All of these effective practices include things that ensure to find the students place within the work. Anything written could be essays, research, discussions, etc. Presentations could consist of projects that require students to present information they have found. This could be just submitting slide shows or presenting via zoom or google meets. Having these effective practices are important for all. It shows that students understand the subjects and can prove their knowledge with these works. Its helpful for the teachers so they can assess where each student is within the subject itself.
Recommendations:
One recommendation I found within the reading was rubrics. I believe that rubrics can be very helpful for teachers and students. I want to use them as a grading scale for myself but also my expectations for my students. Rubrics can be as simple as a checklist that specifies requirements for the assignment. Rubrics can come in all shapes and sizes as they can be formatted differently for each teacher. One could be very complicated to read while others are straight to the point and inform each student what they need to have.
I want to use rubrics in my classroom to make things easier for my students as well as myself. Rubrics can simplify my grading process. My rubrics will be set up with ALL instructions and expectations stated. As well as the requirements for the project. I want the students to be able to use this as a checklist while completing their project. I will also ensure each student is physically handed a copy so they know what to expect. I will have a very basic rubric but very informative rubric so it is easy to read. I will also leave a self-reflection section on the rubric for students to express how they did on the project.
