Augmented and Virtual reality's in Education!
What is the value of using AR/VR in education?
Augmented reality (AR) and Virtual reality (VR) has offered teachers a wider range of tools to present information to their students. These have also helped create more interactive ways for teachers to give out information. AR is technology that allows for interactions with virtual objects what are appearing in one space. VR is technology that allows for a 360 degree view of an environment chosen by the teacher. For example, if a teacher wants to show their students historical sites or other historical times, VR is the best option for this teacher. AR/VR has also been an uprising thing in classroom settings. Both of these options (VR/AR) are good ways for educators to teach their students using new and uprising technology.
Project VOISS in special education
The AR/VR tool that I chose to mention for special education students is Project VOISS. Project VOISS is short for project virtual reality opportunities to implement social skills. This is a department of education funded program based out of the university of Kansas center for researching learning. This is specially meant for middle school aged students that have disabilities. This is also a controlled setting that provides low risk for the students and educators. Knowing that working with children with disabilities can be hard, having a low risk environment for everyone keeps them safe and creates a safe place for all.
Project VOISS can be used in multiple school-based environments. That includes classrooms, buses, hallways, etc. VOISS helps students move through social stories. They are presented with social stories and social situation's where they need to problem solve interactions. Having the students use these can engage learning and help them overcome barriers. This can also help them achieve their full potential. Many students with disabilities struggle with overcoming social situations. VOISS can help these students learn to overcome the struggles and become more confident in the society.
I can use VOISS with my students to help them feel better about social situations. Knowing that this is meant for student to overcome these barriers, I can show the students that it isn't as scary as it seems. I can also use this in my class to help the students learn better in the classroom. Depending on each disability, I can change each situation to match each student. Helping these students become more confident and overcome these barriers can help them feel better about being in public, make them want to interact with others, and show them that the world isn't as scary as it appears.
Well done explaining this topic! I enjoyed your explanation of Project VOISS, specifically your emphasis on helping students overcome social barriers and wanting kids to be successful in this area.
ReplyDeleteI like the large sub too is , definitely going to use this in my own blogs next time ! I chose this same exact form of VR for my blog also ! I agree that letting students practice will make them more comfortable in real life situations. Loved your work.
