How will CRP affect your teaching and your learning?

How will CRP affect your teaching and your learning?

To start off... What is Culturally responsive pedagogy, culturally relevant pedagogy, and culturally sustaining pedagogy?:

Culturally responsive pedagogy
- Culturally responsive pedagogy to me, is valuing and focusing on my students cultures. That could be teaching my students cultures in lessons, honoring their holidays, allowing them to speak on their cultures in the class, etc. To be culturally responsive, we need to be caring, have interest in their beliefs, have knowledge, and understand who they are. As teachers, we need to know and use the students background in all aspects in our classrooms. It also means that we need to adapt to the students. WE should be pushing out the cultures in the school. Instead, we should start allowing the school to adapt to our students instead of the students adapting to our school. We are here to understand and appreciate students and their backgrounds.

Culturally relevant pedagogy
- Culturally revenant Pedagogy can be shared in many different ways. A way that we can have this is using the students cultural backgrounds for assignments. We can have assignments that are also based on the students experiences. Hearing and understanding students cultures is important to achievement in the classroom. In the Gloria Ladson video, I remember her stating that "Culture is a powerful force in shaping how we see ourselves and the world around us". This quote is so important because it's straight to the point. Without bringing in the outside culture and understanding how it affects us, we're sitting ducks that know nothing! We need to help students become successful and help them learn that their cultural background is okay and that they understand where they come from.

Culturally sustaining pedagogy
- Culturally sustaining pedagogy can mean expressing students beliefs, values, cultures, etc., in the classroom. We are here to support the students, not change them. We are also here to ensure they continue to show their culture instead of hide it because of shame. We are here to create an equitable environment for all students and staff that walk in the doors.

How Will Culturally Responsive Pedagogy affect my teaching and my learning?
There are many ways that Culturally responsive pedagogy will affect my teaching and my learning. First, it will force to me engage more with my students cultures and that can enhance my learning alongside of it. When I say "engage", I mean that I can engage their cultures with my lessons and act as a voice for them. Another way it will affect my learning is by forcing me to understand and know another culture other than my own. I believe that in my classroom, it'll be important for me to understand each and every students culture so I can understand them (because they are their own culture and we cant stop them from showing it). As a future teacher, I want my students to feel welcomed and feel that they can be who they really are in a class rather than not show it at all.
